Japanese Animation - Cartoon or NOT!

Japanese word borrowed from French, and is used to mean “animation”. Outside of Japan, anime refers specifically to Japanese animation or animation that mimics Japanese animation. Manga is the Japanese word for comics or sequential art.
One interesting difference to Western cartoons is interleaving of fantasy world and reality. American cartoon heros have this super-human traits off fight evil. In Japanese animation, the characters are doing ordinary things. They go to school, do homework, get in trouble with their parents, etc.
You can empathize with the characters and yet escape the day to day to a fantasy world.
The characters are not perfect and have annoying little habits or some other character flaw but
also has hopes and dreams that draw in the viewer. As one writer put it, they are “character oriented.”
The actions of the characters have consequences. Then they learn from these consequences. (However, just like in real life, not all us learn the first time around.)
You watch these characters grow and change, they improve skills, they develop new skills, and grow and mature.
As you can see there is a lot of depth to these Japanese animations. But bottom line: they are not real people but characters from the imagination. They are cartoons.

Japanese Animation - Cartoon or NOT! ….. the Debate Continues

The last post on this subject quoted a rather passionate person on the subject.
From what I have read, Japanese animation cartoon, most commonly referred to as: anime …
covers very serious topics, situational comedy or soap opera, involve police or detective drama or
mystery. It appears much deeper than most American cartoons.
They tend to develop characters around a central storyline and from I have seen have more depth than traditional western cartoons.
Another interesting trait is that they seem to have a definite end. Most western cartoons go on episode after episode without relying on past content.
What are your thoughts?
